Large Spike in New Cases

Graph on Infection

The United States is experiencing a large spike in new cases of COVID-19. And the delta variant is a key factor.

This report is written using data collected by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). And it shows a large spike in new cases. Let us look at the numbers:

Looking back two months, on June 14 there were a reported 8,134 new cases in a single day. But in just a single month from June 14 to July 14, the number of new cases increased by nearly five times. And on July 14 there were 39,624 new cases.

But the rapid spread did not stop there; and just about a month later, on August 13, the number of new cases jumped again to 140,144. This represents another jump by over three times.

Zooming out for a moment, the United States went from around 8,000 new daily cases to over 140,000 in just two months.

The Delta Variant

We have written multiple stories on the powerful new delta variant. About 95% of new cases are caused by this variant.

It appears to spread much easier and faster than other strains.

Over time, viruses mutate. And they create new strains. With COVID-19, this is regularly occurring, too.

New strains are different. In some cases, they appear to spread easier. And with others, vaccines and other control measures may be less effective.

In fact, on June 22 we issued a red alert on the variant. And we recommended everyone to get fully vaccinated as soon as possible. More, this is partially due to the fact that a single shot of the vaccine is far less effective in stopping the strain than both does. Thus, being fully vaccinated offers far more protection.

How to get Vaccinated
