This article discusses recent reports on “breakthrough cases” that later become “long Covid.”
The news media has been reporting on “breakthrough cases” in vaccinated individuals. That is, despite being fully vaccinated, they still get the virus. But in nearly all these cases, symptoms are mild. And the vaccine protects them from serious illness and hospitalization.
But some breakthrough cases are leading to serious illness. And this includes the development of “long Covid”.
“Long Covid” or “Post Covid” is a condition impacting millions. And it will take time before its true impact will be understood.
Those who have it continue experiencing symptoms after they recover from the virus itself. The symptoms and severity vary with each case.
It was discovered fairly early in the pandemic. And it was first officially recognized as a syndrome in children. And soon after, the same condition was recognized in adults, too. We began reporting this early.
NPR recently published an in-depth interview about one such case.
In the story, NPR interviews a woman who was fully vaccinated. But despite this, became sick with the virus. And then developed “long Covid.”
This is a rare case. But it is significant. And likely supports the need for booster shots for some.
Vaccines are key to ending the pandemic. And they have saved countless lives.
