HMI: Lower Mask compliance in Rural areas

We found lower mask compliance in rural areas. Wearing a mask is key to halt the coronavirus (COVID-19). Our recent survey data is alarming.

Since early in the pandemic, we have been conducting surveys on mask-wearing. One of the regular geographic areas we have visited is eight counties within central Pennsylvania.

Currently, several of them are experiencing the highest number of new cases in the state (weekly, Nov 2020). But at the same time, we found lower compliance in rural areas. The same areas that are experience a spike in new cases.

Surveys are done in public locations. The surveys record:

  • Individuals wearing protective masks
  • Individuals without masks
  • Wearing correctly (over the nose and mouth)
  • Mask material/source
  • Study excludes small children

In one hard hit area, we found compliance as low as ~27%. Even though new cases were spiking.

The highest rate of compliance we found is in college and university towns. This is an outliner.

And it may be an indicator for following other preventative steps, too.

This underscores the importance of supporting key health messages. They are a reminder. This has long been practiced by health communication experts.

There are several key steps to take to reduce the spread of the virus. They are social distancing, wearing a mask, hand washing and to avoid touching of the face.

Masks are key. And we have underscored this since the beginning. Here are the key mask messages. Please share them. This is key.

Masks Protect the Person Wearing the Mask

Masks help protect us from the virus.  This is key.

Masks Protect Others, too

Masks also protect others, too. It can be days before symptoms appear. Yet, you could still spread it. Also, some people carry the virus but never experience symptoms themselves.

Masks Telegraph a Key Health Message

A mask is a health message. Wearing one telegraphs an important health message.

A mask reminds the person wearing it that the virus is serious.  It also reminds others of the same message, too. Please set a positive example for others. Wear a mask.

A Face Shield Alone is not enough

A face shield alone will not stop COVID-19. Here is why.

We first published this story on September 2. It is worth repeating.

A simple study shows the limits of a plastic face shield. And they will not protect us from the virus. Nor protect others. It was done at the Florida Atlantic University.

However, wearing a face mask with the face shield does work.  And they have other advantages, too. Experts point out that a face shield will protect the eyes and discourage touching of the face.
